The futures bright, the future is youth.

Getting young people interested in politics is not easy. Politics and politicians are not that sexy or cool as far as most young people are concerned. Even when we do manage to sign them up, they are treated with suspicion and are told to speak when spoken to. John Prescott hit the nail on the head at a recent 'Go Fourth' campaign when he said 'embrace young people, don't shove them in the corner and tell them to be quiet'. Wise words from a man who understands the importance of the youth movement in politics.

That said, I am lucky as my CLP embraced me with open arms and does so with all young
people that come and join us. Derby North CLP is very friendly and very proactive with lots of
things going on. A full campaign calendar and a social diary that is full of everything from hill
walking to the upcoming 'Bangers and mash' night. Young people are encouraged to get
involved and take up positions within the party. I hold the positions of branch secretary and CLP youth officer. I am also a delegate at the GC and LGC. Now I know from speaking to other Labour students that this is not the case across the country. Young members often feel alienated and undervalued. This makes me extremely angry, yes I understand that people have to start at the bottom, but they should at least be treated with respect. The party and the men and women in Grey suits need to remember that young people are the future. Treat them right now and they will be loyal and will get involved. Treat them badly and they will become bitter and will never come back.

So what's the answer? Well the Derby North model works and should be rolled out across the party. When a new young member joins, make them feel welcome and get them involved. Don't just send them out knocking on doors or stuffing envelopes. Get them to sit in on meetings and get them to write policy motions. You might even find that they have some really good ideas. Yes they will need coaching and pushing in the right direction, but you will find that they will develop and turn into a well rounded politician. And finally, do not alienate them. Do not make them think that they are worthless. The Labour party is going through massive changes at the minute and we will need all the talent that we can get our hands on in the very near future. So start today and email or call your young members and ask them to come to the next meeting. You might be surprised when one of them says yes and ends up as your ppc in a few years time.
